David – Craft (Lesson #5)

David – Activities & Crafts (Lesson #5)

Memory Verse: Samuel 18: 14-15 “And David acted prudently in all his campaigns, and Jehovah was with him. And when Saul saw that he acted very prudently, he stood in awe of him.”

Approved Crafts:

Younger and Older Children – Door Hanger

Materials needed:
• Memory verses printed onto sheets of mailing labels (we used Avery 5160)
• Door hangers, precut (we used foam and wooden ones from Michaels or Hobby Lobby)
• Adhesive foam letters (Buy the peel and stick type)
• Pieces of ribbons, yarn (ask saints for their scraps!)
• Assorted beads, bells, buttons – with large holes
• Sharpie
• Extra adhesive (glue dots, double sided tape, wood or foam glue)

Instructions:
• Ask each child to choose a door hanger.
• Let them choose foam letters to decorate their door hanger.
• Give them a memory verse label and ask them to stick it onto their door hanger. This is where you probably need the extra adhesive because mailing labels don’t stick very well to foam.
• Help the children tie pieces of yarn or ribbon to the top of their door hanger, leaving enough room for it to fit over their doorknob.
• They can string bells, buttons, beads onto the yarn, if they want. If they’re having a hard time getting the yarn to fit through the hole of a bead or button, try using the tip of a sharpened pencil to coax it through. Tie their baubles on tightly so they won’t fall off!

Craft (Older Children):  Glass Magnets

Materials needed:
• Memory verse printed onto sheets of mailing labels (we used Avery 5160)
• Cardstock cut into 1.5” x 3” rectangles

  • Mod Podge Matte or school glue
  • Clear, 1.5” or 2”, flat-back, glass cabochons or disks (bulk from Hobby Lobby or Amazon) – children may want to make more than one, so buy more than one per child
  • Scissors
  • Circle punch the same diameter as the glass cabochons (optional)
  • Assorted patterned scrapbook paper, cut into smaller pieces 3”x3” (bulk from Hobby Lobby or Michaels)
  • Round magnets smaller than the glass cabochons (bulk from Amazon)
  • Small Styrofoam or paper plate for Mod Podge
  • Foam brushes (shared among 2-3 children, bulk from Hobby Lobby or Amazon)
  • Pencil

Instructions:

  • Distribute a memory verse label and rectangle of cardstock to each child.
  • Affix memory verse onto cardstock.
  • Hand each child 1-2 glass disks.
  • Let them choose from the assortment of patterned scrapbook paper, one piece of paper per disk.
  • If using circle punch, punch out a circle from scrapbook paper. If not using circle punch, trace around the glass disk using a pencil and cut out the circle.
  • Put a small amount of Mod Podge or school glue onto the paper plate. Hand out foam brushes. 2-3 children can share one plate and brush.
  • Using the foam brush, spread a very small amount of glue onto the FLAT SIDE of the glass disk.
  • Glue the scrapbook circle to the glass disk, with the patterned side of paper facing the glued side of the glass disk. You want the patterned paper to show when domed side of disk is facing up. (Please see photo of finished project).
  • Hand out a magnet to each child. Place a dab of glue onto one side of the magnet and stick it onto the flat side of the glass disk (the side with backside of scrapbook paper)
  • Allow glue to dry completely before moving the disks.
  • Repeat the process if children would like to make more than one magnet.
