Instructions:
- Memory Verse: Give each child a Memory Verse label and colored cardstock. Stick the label onto the cardstock, allowing room on one end for a hole to be punched. Punch a hole at one end of the cardstock. Cut a short length of yarn or string and slide the Memory Verse onto the string. Write their names on the other side of the cardstock. Tie a knot at the end of the string to form a
hanger for the tissue paper butterflies. - Forming the wings: Give each child 6 squares of tissue paper. Use different colors to create gradient effects. Stack the tissue paper together so that all edges align. Fold the tissue paper in 1” strips, back and forth like making a fan. Keeping the tissue paper folded as an accordion, fold wings in half and staple to secure in the middle. Younger children may need help in this step!
- Customize the wings: Keep the wings folded like an accordion and customize them by cutting the ends into fringes, rounded or pointed shapes (please see photo above). Open the butterfly by gently separating the different sheets. Arrange and fluff the wings.
- Make the body of the butterfly: Fold a piece of pipe cleaner into a V-shape and slip 3-4 pony beads onto each end of the pipe cleaner, moving them towards the bottom of the V-shape. Curl the ends of the pipe cleaner around a pencil to form the antennae. Twist the bottom of the V-shape (below the beads) once to make the bottom of the butterfly. Place the paper wings in the middle and twist the pipe cleaner one more time to secure the butterfly’s body in place. Feed one antenna through the string holding the Memory Verse. Give the antennae a couple of twists to secure the string. The string is the hanger for the butterfly.
