  • Glue
  • Stapler with staples, very helpful for securing plates (can be shared)
  • Hole punch
  • Crayons or markers
  • Scissors
  • Pencils

Instructions:

  • Making the picture frame: Give each child 1 paper plate and crayons or markers. Turn plate over and color on back of plate, along the outer rim. Cut out a circle from the middle of the paper plate. Younger children may need help doing this.
  • Making the self-portrait: Give each child a second paper plate and color the middle portion of plate (where you would normally put food). This will be the background of their self-portrait.
  • Choose from assorted skin-colored paper and trace a head using head template. Cut out the head and glue it onto the background of the 2nd plate.
  • Decorate the head with scraps of yarn or felt for hair, googly eyes, etc. Fold a scrap piece of cardstock to make a 3-dimensional nose. Remember to make a shirt! Give yourself freckles, glasses, missing baby teeth…
  • Align 1st paper plate (frame) onto 2nd plate (the part of the plate where you normally put food should face each other) and staple plates together along the rim.
  • Punch 2 holes at the top of plates. String yarn through both holes and tie together to form picture hanger.
  • Give each child a Memory Verse label and rectangle cardstock, stick the Memory Verse onto the cardstock, and glue or staple it to the front of the picture frame as shown in photo above. Write their name on the back.
