Memory Verse: John 20:31 But these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

Younger & Older Children – Burlap Placemats
*ATTENTION: SOME PREPARATION NEEDED PRIOR TO CONFERENCE SESSION

Materials needed:

  • Memory Verse printed onto Avery 5160 or 8160 Mailing Labels. Do prior to session*
  • Colored cardstock cut into 1 ½” x 3 ½” rectangles, helpful if cut prior to session*
  • 10-12” Round or 10”x14” Rectangular burlap (we ordered ours in bulk from Oriental Trading – which has a moisture repellant coating, or you could pre-cut your own from yardage of burlap prior to conference session)
  • Assorted colorful, medium-width fabric ribbon, cut into 12” lengths
  • Twine, jute or yarn, cut into 4” lengths
  • Fabric Glue or Mod Podge for Fabric
  • Q-tips or cotton swabs for applying fabric glue
  • Alphabet stencils (either make your own or buy them from Walmart, Amazon)
  • Assorted Markers, not Sharpies
  • Paper plate to put underneath placemats while coloring with markers & applying glue
  • Masking tape (not shown)
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Pen or pencil

Instructions:

  • Hand each child a rectangle cardstock, a Memory Verse label, and a pencil or pen.
  • Have them affix the Memory Verse to the cardstock, centering it and allowing room on one edge for a hole punch. Write their name on the back of the cardstock.
  • Give them a 4” piece of string and loop it through their Memory Verse.
  • Let them choose a ribbon and help them tie it into a bow, looping the Memory Verse string into the bow.
  • Hand each child one burlap placemat and a paper plate to put underneath their placemat while they work. Using a small amount of fabric glue, attach the bow/Memory Verse to the placemat. Do not use too much glue or it will seep through the burlap. If there are loose threads on the burlap, dab a very small amount of glue onto the edges to prevent the burlap from unraveling. Allow glue to dry before handling the placemat.
  • Let children choose a stencil initial to color on their placemat (for example, Hannah might use the letter “H” or John might use the letter “J”). Please DO NOT allow “free drawing or writing” to prevent a mess.
  • Keeping the paper plate underneath the placemat, hold the stencil in place with a small piece of masking tape. Trace the letter onto the placemat. Younger children may require your help to trace the letter.
  • Help the children gently fill in their stenciled letter on the placemat. DO NOT use too much pressure or ink, as this will seep through the burlap or cause the burlap to fray.
  • Leave the paper plate underneath the placemat until the glue has dried.
